Get to Know Your Property Manager – Peter Wright, Chinchilla Downtown Motor Inn

At Southern Cross Motel Group, our people are at the heart of what makes each property special. Today, we’re introducing Peter Wright, Property Manager at Chinchilla Downtown Motor Inn — a people person with decades of hospitality experience, a great sense of humour, and a genuine passion for connecting with guests.

1. What is your name and which Southern Cross Motel Group property do you manage?

Peter Wright – Chinchilla Downtown Motor Inn Property Manager.

2. How long have you worked in the hospitality industry, and what first drew you into it?

I have worked in the hospitality industry since I was around 16 years old. I asked my local publican in my hometown in northern Victoria if I could help after school and on weekends. After a few weeks, I was moving kegs of beer and became his weekend cellarman — that was fun! Haha.

3. What do you enjoy most about working in hospitality day to day?

What I enjoy most about the industry is meeting our guests and listening to their stories about life, work, and their travels around the countryside.

4. What is a fun fact about you that most guests wouldn’t know?

Some fun facts about me are that I am an identical twin, and my identical twin brother has identical twin daughters! But the best thing there is that I’m the oldest by 5 minutes — hahaha.

5. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work that help you unwind?

My interests outside work are my family.

My wife is from Peru, South America, and we have a 13-year-old daughter, Luana, born in Cairns, Australia. The girls live back home in the city of Chiclayo, Peru, which is about eight hours north of the capital, Lima. My wife is a Captain in the Peruvian Military.

Each night after I finish work, I chat with the girls to unwind and check in on how they’re going.

I also have three sons from my previous marriage. My two youngest sons are combat soldiers in the ADF, and my oldest son is a tradesman/builder. I’m a very proud father.

6. What do you love most about your local area or community?

Being born and raised in country Victoria, it’s not hard to love Chinchilla.

The strength of the community in small business, the farming families, and the FIFO workers you meet are the real heart and soul of our great nation.

7. Can you share a hidden gem or local spot nearby that visitors might not know about?

A hidden gem in our community is the local brewery. I haven’t been there myself yet, but I’m told by our guests who visit that it is well worth a night out.

8. What is one thing you think makes your motel experience stand out from others?

At Chinchilla Downtown Motor Inn, we aim to create a welcoming experience where guests feel comfortable, valued, and genuinely looked after. Friendly service, local knowledge, and taking the time to connect with guests are all things we pride ourselves on.

9. What do you enjoy most about your team or working environment?

We have the best cleaning and housekeeping team. The ladies’ communication is excellent, along with their attention to detail and sense of humour. I would be completely lost without them.

10. If guests were to remember one thing about you or your property, what would you hope it is?

I would like to think that guests remember me for being happy and always available to help.

I do love a chat, so many guests get caught up in reception longer than expected — haha.
